Liquor in the Front, Poker in the Rear

Just a few random pics from downtown Las Vegas.

My curiosity was piqued by reader "angerisagift"  who made an offhand comment to my Halloween Slut Parade post about getting Deep Fried Oreos in Vegas.  I couldn't connect that delicacy with Vegas in my mind, so there was some back and forth with him and also another reader, Daniel.  It turns out that one of the smaller joints downtown offers this healthy food choice.

On a recent visit to Fremont Street, I sought out the place.  It is Mermaids casino, a strictly slot casino near the Las Vegas Club.  I recall that during the summer, they have girls in pseudo Mermaid costumes handing out coupons in front.  They are pseudo costumes because if they were real Mermaid costumes, the girls wouldn't have legs and feet and thus wouldn't be able to stand up to hand out the fliers.  Also, they would be bare-breasted, which these girls are not dammit.  Even in Vegas, you can't walk around outside with your breasts totally exposed, although the woman I talked about in this post came close.

So I snapped the pic below, which of course is outside the casino advertising this nutritious delicacy.

Hmm....I believe the apostrophe before the "S" in "Oreo's" is grammatically incorrect.

I went inside and of course immediately realized I had not only been in the place before, but I actually eaten at the very snack bar where they sell the Oreos not too long ago.  It was after a long tournament run at Binion's, it was late at night, and I hadn't had dinner.  I didn't notice the Oreos and had something almost as healthy, a giant hot dog.

The place also sells Deep Fried Twinkies which I believe might be an equally healthy food choice as the Oreos.

But I did recall the sign over the bar, which had caught my interest.  Here it is:

These are surely not the only plastic juggs you'll see in Vegas, but they may be the only ones that are filled with daiquiris.

Across the street, at the Golden Gate, you can sometimes see a scantily, hot bartender either serving adult beverages or dancing on the bartop.  Here's one example:

And this sign in front of Binion's has always amused me:

Hopefully, I have time to do a more meaty post soon.

  1. During a trip downtown 5 or 6 years ago, a few friends and I tried the deep fried twinkies. Sadly, it was the healthiest thing we did all night.

      So....how were they?

And as for the rest of the night....was penicillin eventually involved?

    1. I'm guessing the pics PPP took during this evening were confiscated by the cops when he and his pals were arrested.

They're probably too disgusting to be posted anyway! :)

  3. Since our back and forth, I realized why this may have never been associated with Vegas for you. On my multiple trips to Vegas I realized that one common connection they all had for me was my very limited students bankroll. Fremont Street is excellent for that so the delicacies of Fremont Street naturally became part of my trips. I'm finally excited to see what could be had with a little $ in Vegas now, which is likely less of Fremont Street.

    1. Thanks, Daniel. I guess if you're broke you can live on those 99 cent deep fried Oreos for a weekend, huh?

Let me know if the $99.99 deep fried Oreos at the Bellagio are better than the cheap ones at Mermaids! :)
